Waterproof grade standards and adaptation rules for mirror lamps and mirror cabinets in dry and wet areas

The bathroom space has heavy water vapor and often splashes water. As products that combine electricity, glass, wood, and metal, the waterproof level of mirror lights and mirror cabinets is the core standard for selection and safe use. The industry wide IP waterproof level classification system, with two digits representing dustproof level and waterproof level respectively, requires strict selection of corresponding levels for bathroom mirrors according to dry and wet areas. Once the levels do not match, safety hazards such as circuit short circuits, lamp damage, cabinet mold, and leakage are likely to occur.

Firstly, interpret the meaning of IP rating. The first digit represents dust prevention, ranging from 0-6 levels. For household mirror lights and cabinets, achieving IP4 or above is sufficient to prevent dust from entering the internal circuits and cabinet gaps; The second digit represents waterproofing, level 0-8, and is the key to distinguishing between dry and wet areas. IP44 is a basic standard for bathroom mirrors, representing the ability to resist splashing water from all directions. It can be used around the washbasin and in dry area bathrooms, and is also the waterproof level of most conventional mirror lights and cabinets on the market; IP54 has slightly higher waterproof performance than IP44, with stronger anti splash and anti splash capabilities, making it suitable for locations closer to the shower area; IP65 belongs to the high waterproof level and can withstand low-pressure water spray. It can be directly used in shower areas, open bathroom wet areas, and is not afraid of large amounts of water flow erosion; IP67 and IP68 are diving grade waterproof, and are not commonly used in household mirror lights. They are mostly used outdoors and in special industrial scenarios.

Adaptation rules for dry areas: The bathroom has implemented standard dry wet separation, with mirror lights and mirror cabinets installed on one side of the washbasin in the dry area. There is only a small amount of hand washing water in daily use, so choosing IP44 grade products is completely sufficient. This type of area can choose from a wider range of products, including pure mirror lights, square/circular conventional mirror lights, solid wood multi-layer mirror cabinets, intelligent mirror lights with touch dimming, digital display and other functions, without the need to pursue ultra-high waterproof levels. The humidity in the dry area is relatively low, and wooden cabinets and ordinary light strips can be used stably. The product selection range is wide, and cost-effective styles are mostly available.

Wet area adaptation rules: For integrated bathrooms without dry wet separation, mirrors should be installed near showers, bathtubs, and other areas that are constantly covered by water vapor and splashes. It is strictly prohibited to use products with an IP44 rating or lower, and waterproof mirror lights with an IP54 rating or higher must be selected. Mirror cabinets should preferably be made of all aluminum waterproof cabinets. In high humidity environments in wet areas, not only should the circuit be waterproof, but the cabinet material should also not use ordinary solid wood panels, otherwise it will mold, expand, and peel off paint in the short term. At the same time, the circuit interface, switch, and touch panel of the wet area mirror light must be fully sealed, and the fewer exposed buttons, the better. It is recommended to choose a hidden touch switch to reduce the probability of water ingress.

In addition to the official waterproof rating, there are also accompanying usage protection rules. Firstly, all power sockets and junction boxes of mirror lights and mirror cabinets must be kept away from areas where water flows directly. Waterproof boxes should be installed on sockets, and the wall potential should be grounded to prevent leakage; Secondly, core circuit components such as mirror lights, light strips, and circuit boards are all sealed with glue in regular products. When purchasing, you can check the product details. Even if products without sealing are labeled with IP44, their waterproof ability will be greatly reduced; Thirdly, embedded mirror cabinets and mirror lights with wiring at the back should have moisture-proof treatment inside the walls to prevent water seepage from soaking the wiring and cabinet backboards; Fourthly, after long-term use, waterproof gaskets and sealants will age. Check the sealing parts of the mirror lamp and mirror cabinet every 2-3 years, and replace the glass sealant and waterproof gasket in a timely manner after aging to restore waterproof performance.

In addition, non bathroom spaces such as bedrooms, cloakrooms, and entrances can use mirror lights and mirror cabinets without considering high waterproof levels. The IP40 basic dustproof version is sufficient, and such environments are dry and free of water accumulation. Focus on the light source, shape, and storage function, without additional waterproof costs.
